Life Story for Elizabeth Choate "Betty" Armitage (Hodgson)

Betty was known for her colorful personality an lived her life her own way. She had great sense of style, enjoyed travel, loved sports cars and horses, even rode a Harley Davidson motorcycle in her younger days. She graduated from SPHS in 1942, and attended SPJC. She married Capt. Carl Weaver of the US Coast Guard when she was eighteen. For a time the young family was stationed in Honolulu, Hawaii which planted a seed of attachment for the islands. Later, divorce and circumstances caused her to develop a strong sense of self responsibility as she raised her children as a single mother in St. Petersburg, FL.

Her early working career had her traveling on the road as a land appraiser for Hunnicutt & Associates. The urge to return to the Hawaiian Islands won her over in fall of 1969. In Honolulu, she worked as a licensed land title searcher & abstractor at Long & Malone. She was particularly proud of her genealogical work proving property titles on behalf of native Hawaiians and others.

She was an active member of Civil Air Patrol Aloha SAR Squadron in Honolulu where she met the love of her life, John Armitage. They married July 1, 1978 at Imiola Church in Waimea. Together, they enjoyed life and travel until JOhn's untimely passing January 3, 2006. Betty spent her years as a widow between Hawaii & Florida until December 2017 when she moved to her recent home on the Big Island.

Betty was preceded in death by her son Carl L. Weaver, Jr., her sister Virginia Hodgson Gegen, nephew Douglas Gegen, & brother Robert Hodgson. She is survived by her two daughters, Denise Johnsen (Eric) of Ahualoa & Danielle Chapman of Rapid City, SD. She leaves three grandchildren, George Weaver (Brittany) of Kailua-Kona, Leif Johnsen (Bree) of Ahualoa & Evan Johnsen (Megan) and one great grandson Ellis Donegan of Ashland, OR. Also, nephews Robert Hodgson Jr. and Bill Hodgson (Trudy) of St. Petersburg, FL., beloved sister-in-law Marilyn Hodgson, also of St. Pete., and cousin Valerie Levander of Hendersonville, NC.

A colorful character, Betty promised her friends & family "never a dull moment" & truly meant it! She was one of a kind & one never knew what was going to happen next. She kept her sense of humor & endlessly entertaining facial expression to the very end.
There will be many a story told for years to come of a woman who lived her life her own way, departing from the norm with every step along the way.
